The Institute of General Practice Management (IGPM) welcomed the opportunity to contribute to the consultation on the proposed changes to the GP contract for 2026/27. Our members’ expertise was clearly heard, and practice management perspectives were given full consideration throughout the process. We are pleased to see that a number of operational amendments were made in response to feedback from those working at the frontline of general practice.
While progress has been made, there remain areas where further clarity and flexibility will be important. This includes expectations around same-day urgent care and how additional capacity requirements will be supported in practice. General practice must be enabled to balance urgent demand with continuity of care and safe, sustainable workload management.
The IGPM are committed to constructive engagement with policymakers to help ensure that contractual reform is deliverable in practice and sustainable for both general practice teams and the patients they serve.
